Questions and Answers with Leon Tschurtschenthaler
How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Originally, the idea was to give the player as much freedom as possible while playing the story, to make the most of the interactivity. Naturally, I took inspiration from TTRPGs like Dungeons and Dragons – a game where you can do practically everything. Since this is my first interactive audio story, I wanted to get right into writing, which is why I skipped worldbuilding by using an old Witcher-inspired world of mine I once wrote for a TTRPG. This also meant that I could reuse aspects of that world to create a new story within, and I’d say it worked out quite nicely.
What was the biggest challenge in writing it?
Getting it done. Everytime I tried to write down a small side-part of the story, I noticed another point where the player could make a decision. Then sometimes, those decisions had different options based on your choices at character creation, so eventually, the story grew bigger and bigger. Though I had a hard time cutting small aspects down, I still got it done in the end.
What advice can you give players about the story in advance?
Don’t be frustrated if you don’t arrive at a good ending first-try. The story is about as branched out as can be, there are so many different ending – and not all of them are good. Also, because of this, don’t expect to understand the entirety of the plot in you first playthrough – there are some options you only get with certain characters, so play it a few times over if you want the whole picture.
What other projects / stories do you have planned?
I’m already working on my next Story for Twist-Tales, so that’s something. Meanwhile, some fellow students and I are working on a 2D-Jump’n’Run, and I have a bunch of smaller side-projects going on while I’m still at Uni. What is special about your story? Or why should I play your story?
What I love most about “Of Streets and Secrets” is the impact of the character creation: Although it only takes up the first two choices, it influences the entirety of the story. Depending on you origin and your profession, the game provides you with different options to solve problems – or creates new ones based on your character. I think this is what really sets OSaS apart from most other interactive stories, where you get a fixed character and just have to run with it.
